Defining TiP

Why it matters

What is Triglyceride-Induced Pancreatitis?
Triglyceride-Induced Pancreatitis (TiP) is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when extremely high levels of triglycerides (a type of fat found in the blood) trigger inflammation of the pancreas.
The pancreas is an organ that helps regulate blood sugar and produces enzymes needed for digestion. When triglyceride levels become very high—often above 1,000 mg/dL—the risk of developing acute pancreatitis increases significantly. Hypertriglyceridemia is considered the third leading cause of acute pancreatitis after gallstones and alcohol-related disease.
Who Is at Risk?
People may be at increased risk if they have:
- Severe hypertriglyceridemia (sHTG)
- Familial Chylomicronemia Syndrome (FCS)
- Multifactorial Chylomicronemia Syndrome (MCS)
- Type 2 diabetes
- Obesity or metabolic syndrome
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Certain medications
- A family history of triglyceride disorders
Why Is TiP Serious?
Acute pancreatitis often requires hospitalization and can lead to:
- Severe pain
- Recurrent hospital admissions
- Organ failure
- Long-term pancreatic damage
- Increased risk of future pancreatitis episodes
