Listening to what your body is telling you.
MCS can be silent for years, and then make itself known quickly. Knowing the signs helps you and your care team act early.
what you’ll find on this page
Common symptoms
Recurrent upper-abdominal pain, nausea after fatty meals, bloating, fatigue, and small yellowish bumps on the skin.
Visible clues
Lab blood that appears pale or milky, a faint white ring around the iris, and eruptive xanthomas on elbows or knees.
When to seek urgent care
Severe persistent abdominal pain, pain radiating to the back, vomiting that won’t stop, or fever, possible signs of acute pancreatitis.
The signs many people miss
Because triglyceride levels often rise gradually, the early symptoms of MCS are easy to attribute to other things, stress, diet, a busy week. But certain patterns deserve attention, especially if they recur.
Common symptoms
- Recurrent abdominal pain, often in the upper or middle abdomen
- Nausea and vomiting, especially after fatty meals
- Bloating, indigestion, or a feeling of fullness
- Unexplained fatigue or ‘brain fog’
- Small yellowish bumps on the skin (eruptive xanthomas), most often on the elbows, knees, back, or buttocks
- A pale or milky appearance to the blood when drawn for lab work
- A faint white ring around the colored part of the eye (arcus)
Warning signs that need urgent care
Acute pancreatitis is a medical emergency. Seek care immediately if you experience:
- Severe, persistent pain in the upper abdomen that may radiate to the back
- Pain that worsens after eating
- Persistent vomiting that won’t stop
- Fever combined with abdominal pain
- Rapid heartbeat or feeling faint
Why symptoms vary so much
Two people with similar triglyceride numbers can feel very different. Some live for years without obvious symptoms; others experience pain or pancreatitis at lower thresholds. The difference often comes down to the combination of factors driving the triglycerides up, and the body’s individual response to them. This is why MCS care is most effective when it is personalized.
